The first big surprise: Vincent Girardin sells up lock, stock and barrel – and vineyards in 2011 and moves to Picardy. The second dramatic moment was the return of his son Pierre to Meursault in 2017, with the subsequent construction of impressive modern premises just below the main road. Here Pierre is making an interesting range of wines of both colours
The original 2ha of vineyards which his parents had kept when they otherwise sold up in 2011 has now been increased to 4.80ha supplemented by purchased grapes from various vineyards, including some rather prestigious ones. The domaine is run organically but will wait until they have more vineyards before certifying. They are amongst those who are training their vines higher in these warmer conditions, with no deleafing and minimal hedging.
The whites are made in 350 and 456l barrels, with 30% new wood except for the simpler appellations. The reds are made mostly with their stems, avoiding punching down, and matured in regular 228 litre barrels. The wines spend 12 months in barrel (15 for grands crus) and then a further three months for red or six for white in tank before bottling. Early days yet, but Pierre-Vincent Girardin has made a promising start.
