This is the more discreet cousin of the famous Hospices de Beaune, holding its own auction in March rather than November, which has the advantage that the wines are further along their paths before buying decisions have to be made.

The Hospices de Nuits originated in 1270, though the buildings on its current site date back to 1692, shortly after which Louis XIV endowed the previously impoverished Hospices at the expense of other local institutions. In the 20th century the Hospices became an old people’s home, there being remarkably little leprosy or tuberculosis to deal with. In 2016 the Hospices de Nuits came under the auspices of the Hospices Civils de Beaune, and in 2018 a brand new hospital was constructed.

On the wine side, the Hospices de Nuits remains independent of Beaune, and is managed by regisseur Jean-Marc Moron with 4 full-time vineyard workers to look after the (nearly) 13ha. A new cuvérie was built in 2001 to vinify the grapes from the Hospices’ vineyards, which are almost all from Nuits-St-Georges, including the monopoly of the premier cru Les Didiers.
